Corner of mainland Europe

Sagres fort gateway

We reached the bottom corner of mainland Europe. There’s a car park to stop at in Sagres, it’s directly infront of the old defensive fort. The fort is only one wall, the other 3 sides of the fort are 60 metre high cliffs.
If you go into the fort you get to see locals fishing off the cliff edges. There’s also a man made structure that surrounds a hole through the cliff… you walk into the structure and at its centre is the blow hole which amplifies the sound of the sea crashing below the cliff, turning it into a roar of cold air that rushes up from inside the cliff.
We also took a cycle along the coast to Saö Vicente, the other little end of mainland Europe to try and spot some birds on the little island just off shore.
