Putting more light into the van 🚐

We’ve gone for the caravan style windows in the side of the van – Dometic S7P’s – they’re double glazed, and have 3 latches that allow you to have the window at various settings.

As with the roof light & vent, we had to build wooden frames to act as support for the windows in the metal. We curved the side struts of these frames so that they fitted with the curve of the van and windows.
We started with the largest window that goes in the sliding door – in case it all went wrong, we could buy a new sliding door!!
It turns out that the large hole saw that we bought to drill the window corners out of the metal wasn’t the right tool for the job…after blowing up the neighbours drill 😬 we resorted to a jigsaw and Dave’s steady hand.

In a similar process to the roof vents, the windows needed:
– Marking out exact cutting location on wall.
– Cutting the out the window shaped hole in the van metal wall.
– Filing any sharp edges and then painting with hammerite to prevent rust.
– Primer.
– Stick wooden frame in place, clamp and leave to dry.
– Stick window in place and screw in the little metal clips to hold it in place.
– Fight over who gets to peel off the sticky on the windows.

We took a day to install each window. It was a blood pressure raising job doing the windows, so we’ve taken lots of photos, so I’ll add more images/videos in a later post so you can see more action.
