Bakio

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

We stopped at Bakio on the North coast of Spain. The town is a bit quiet now, being out of season, but they have a skate park, so we could take the skateboard along for some practising.
From Bakio you can walk over the cliffs to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe – an island with a shrine to St John the Baptist.
You walk down the cliff on a paved path and along a walkway onto the island to then climb the 241 steps to the top of the island.
Once at the top, rumour has it that you will ward off evil spirits if you ring the church bell three times – there were quite a few visitors to the island, so there was a constant dinging going on to accompany our visit. It’s even more popular now as it was used as a location in Game of Thrones for Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons.
