Reversing camera

Rear view reversing camera

It’s handy when you start using a larger vehicle than you’re used to, to have as much help as you can. Especially when you’re reversing.
At the start of the van build we installed a reversing camera. We removed the high level brake light and replaced it with a brake light with a built in camera.
A cable runs from this to the front of the van and is connected to the electrics, when the van is put into reverse the camera automatically comes on.
It helps, along with the side mirrors and a person at the back waving and gesturing!
We mounted the monitor on a rear view mirror we bought and stuck onto the windscreen – we had to re-stick it twice as the screen is quite heavy. Note: gaffer tape stuck all across the top of the windscreen works well if your screen falls off while driving and needs to be stopped from swinging around from the cables in the roof!
Annoyingly, we were out in the van, went into reverse and the screen went blank…we tested every connection. Final conclusion – the screen had just stopped working.
We went without for a couple of months, concentrating more on the rest of the van build…and honing our gesturing techniques at each other 😁
But, a broken screen is a better scenario than broken cabling hidden in the walls!
We had to buy a new screen, and rather than running it to the rear view mirror we’ve put it on the drivers side of the dashboard…no more gaffer tape emergency sticking!
